Here’s my take on the “Mental Illness” edition of Sketchwar.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
FADE IN:\u00a0 <\/p>\n
INT. PSYCHIATRIC WARD – DAY<\/p>\n
ZEKE CARLSON (30s, unshaven) stares wildly around a small, drab bedroom.<\/p>\n
He mutters to himself, as two doctors -- HARTWELL (40s) and MARY (20s) -- look on.<\/p>\n
The room’s single door is very solid, but has a single glass window at eye level.<\/p>\n
HARTWELL<\/p>\n
And Cisordinal is used primarily to treat Mr. Carlson’s...<\/p>\n
MARY<\/p>\n
Hallucinations. Um. Schizophrenia-manifesting audiovisual hallucinations.<\/p>\n
HARTWELL<\/p>\n
Good.<\/p>\n
Zeke stares at an empty spot in the room, then back to the doctors.<\/p>\n
ZEKE<\/p>\n
The Big Shot says you two have to leave!<\/p>\n
HARTWELL<\/p>\n
What?<\/p>\n
ZEKE<\/p>\n
He’s right there! The Big Shot!<\/p>\n
MARY<\/p>\n
Well. He’s not a hospital employee, so that doesn’t really give him any authority.<\/p>\n
Hartwell takes Mary aside.<\/p>\n
HARTWELL<\/p>\n
You don’t have to agree with the hallucinations. It’s best not to, in fact.<\/p>\n
MARY<\/p>\n
Sorry. It’s -- I do a lot of improv. So it’s kind of instinctive.<\/p>\n
Hartwell nods; they return to the patient.<\/p>\n
ZEKE<\/p>\n
The Big Shot is getting upset!<\/p>\n
MARY<\/p>\n
Yeah, well he’s only, like, five two. I could totally take him in a fight.<\/p>\n
ZEKE<\/p>\n
No! No, he’s seven feet tall! Be careful!<\/p>\n
MARY<\/p>\n
What? I just said the Big Shot was short!<\/p>\n
Hartwell takes her aside again, gives her a questioning look.<\/p>\n
MARY<\/p>\n
Well -- he was blocking! He denied the reality of what I just said, and... right.<\/p>\n
HARTWELL<\/p>\n
Not improv. He’s crazy.<\/p>\n
MARY<\/p>\n
Okay.<\/p>\n
Back to the patient.<\/p>\n
HARTWELL<\/p>\n
Mr. Carlson? Your chart says that you’ve been noncompliant on your Cisordinal.<\/p>\n
(to Mary)<\/p>\n
Right?<\/p>\n
Mary doesn’t respond.<\/p>\n
HARTWELL<\/p>\n
Right?<\/p>\n
MARY<\/p>\n
I’m sorry. It’s just really bad form in improv to tell somebody, “You forgot to take your crazy-pills --<\/p>\n
HARTWELL<\/p>\n
Maybe you should wait outside.<\/p>\n
MARY<\/p>\n
Yeah.<\/p>\n
She steps out of the room, and closes the door.<\/p>\n
ZEKE<\/p>\n
The Big Shot says that you two were doing a largely transactional teaching scene.<\/p>\n
Mary pounds on the door.<\/p>\n
MARY<\/p>\n
OH YOU BASTARD!<\/p>\n
