Radio Reception
10 April 2009
by Peter Rogers
Hi all — here’s my take on the “Silent Scenes” edition of Sketchwar. I took a bit of a liberty with the topic, and assumed that this meant “dialog-free scenes”….
FADE IN:
INT. STUDY – NIGHT
GENT #1 (dapper, 50s, English) sits at a desk in a well appointed study, across from a door that is slightly ajar.
An old radio plays a stormy piece of classical music.
Gent #1 happily waves a baton in time with the music.
Static interferes with the broadcast.
The gent notices: moving the baton one way makes the static really bad. He moves it the other way, and it’s only slightly bad.
The gent puts the baton on the desk and makes lots of experimental adjustments -- he moves an arm this way, a leg that way.
He winds up sitting slightly awkwardly on the desk. The reception is perfect.
Gent #1 sighs contentedly.
Gent #2 (just as dapper, just as English) pushes the door open.
Gent #1 gestures at him to stay back.
It’s no use: Gent #2 walks in.
The reception goes to crap.
Gent #2 makes adjustments in the same way. He winds up in a slightly more awkward/silly position next to Gent #1, but the reception again sounds perfect.
Gent #1 and Gent #2 sigh contentedly.
Gent #3 (again, dapper, English) enters.
Gent #1 and Gent #2 frantically gesture ’stay back’.
It’s no use: Gent #3 walks in.
The reception goes to crap.
Gent #3 makes adjustments in the same way.
But the only thing that works is for him to get as high up as possible.
First he raises one hand.
Then the other.
Then he stands on tip-toe.
Then he gets on the desk.
Then he raises his arms again.
Then he goes on tip-toe again.
Aha! Perfect reception.
He stands like this for a moment, straining to hold that position.
All three gents listen to the music approach its conclusion.
Gent #3 slips a bit.
He steps on the baton.
He comes crashing down on the other two.
With a loud ZOT and a few sparks, all of the electricity in the study goes out.
GENT #1
Damn.

I just wanted to stop in and tell you that I really loved this entry. It was full of great information and creativity, both of which we always can use more of.
